Apple’s WWDC is all set to take place soon and according to rumours, the company is going to announce its first ARM-based chips for future MacBooks and Macs.

The first chip that might be used on some of the MacBooks is being tipped to be a 12-core design that’s based on the 5nm manufacturing process. This might be used in the 12-inch MacBook first and is expected to be more powerful and more efficient than the Intel chip that currently in the MacBook Air. Apple is also planning a desktop CPU for its Mac too.

This would cut the reliance on Intel and cost Apple a lot less to make. Apple is already using the formula with custom mobile ARM chips for iPhones and iPads and it makes sense to expand to PC hardware as well. According to reports, this venture is taking up some solid R&D money.

Apple will be giving its developers a heads-up about the chip to make sure their apps are compatible with the new platform until they hit the market in 2021.
